چکیده

Background Impulsive-compulsive behaviors are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. However, the basal ganglia dysfunctions associated with high impulsivity have not been fully characterized. The objective of this study was to identify features impulsive-compulsive single neurons subthalamic nucleus (STN). Methods We compared temporal and spectral 412 from 12 PD patients 330 without. Single-unit activities were extracted exploratory microrecordings performed during deep brain stimulation (DBS) implant surgery an OFF medication state. Results Patients displayed decreased firing frequency bursts a larger fraction tonic combined weaker beta coherence. Information carried by these led identification accuracy greater than 80%. Subthalamic nucleus stimulation reverses spinal motoneuron activity in parkinsonian patients.

Although a cardinal symptom of Parkinsonian disease, up to now, rigidity has been investigated much less than spasticity in hemiplegic patients. Many pathophysiological mechanisms may at least theoretically contribute to Parkinsonian rigidity, from altered viscoelastic muscle properties to inability of parkinsonian patients to relax. However, as demonstrated many years ago, motoneuron responses...

Subthalamic, not striatal, activity correlates with basal ganglia downstream activity in normal and parkinsonian monkeys

The striatum and the subthalamic nucleus (STN) constitute the input stage of the basal ganglia (BG) network and together innervate BG downstream structures using GABA and glutamate, respectively. Comparison of the neuronal activity in BG input and downstream structures reveals that subthalamic, not striatal, activity fluctuations correlate with modulations in the increase/decrease discharge bal...

Neuronal activity of the human subthalamic nucleus in the parkinsonian and nonparkinsonian state.

We recorded resting-state neuronal activity from the human subthalamic nucleus (STN) during functional stereotactic surgeries. By inserting up to five parallel microelectrodes for single- or multiunit recordings and applying statistical spike-sorting methods, we were able to isolate a total of 351 single units in 65 patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 33 single units in 9 patients suffer...

Parkinsonian beta oscillations in the external globus pallidus and their relationship with subthalamic nucleus activity.

Inappropriately synchronized beta (beta) oscillations (15-30 Hz) in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) accompany movement difficulties in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). The cellular and network substrates underlying these exaggerated beta oscillations are unknown but activity in the external globus pallidus (GP), which forms a candidate pacemaker network with STN, might be of particular import...

Tremor-correlated neuronal activity in the subthalamic nucleus of Parkinsonian patients.

Tremor in Parkinson's disease (PD) is generated by an oscillatory neuronal network consisting of cortex, basal ganglia and thalamus. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) which is part of the basal ganglia is of particular interest, since deep brain stimulation of the STN is an effective treatment for PD including Parkinsonian tremor. It is controversial if and how the STN contributes to tremor generat...
